(1784—1818)
The Father of Athletics in America

After making large sums of money for his enslaver by defeating other enslaved boxers from surrounding Virginia plantations, Molineaux was set free. He moved to New York, the “Headquarters for Negro boxers,” defeated all worthy challengers and earned the title “Champion of America.” Molineaux received international recognition when he fought the acclaimed Heavyweight Champion of the World in England In 1810.
